In the late 1970’s, HP developed the first pen plotter and HP-GL graphics language, now the industry standard. In the early 1990’s, HP invented inkjet technology and applied it to DesignJet printers, making large format printing in black-and-white easy, fast and affordable. HP continued to innovate, and introduced colour, faster printing speeds, and the ability to print high resolution images and complex files in large format in the same decade. In the new millennium, faster printing speeds and sunlight-resistant UV inks were introduced, allowing Print Service Providers and Graphics Designers to create applications for both indoor and outdoor use. Photographers began to adopt HP large format printing to replace silver halide, demonstrating HP’s ability to deliver superior image quality with prints lasting up to 200 years. In 2010, with the rise of mobility and globalisation, HP launched its first generation of ePrinters; with web-connectivity features and the first multifunction large format ePrinters that offer copying, scanning and printing in a single device. HP DesignJet Z6 & Z9+ PostScript Printer Series feature HP thermal inkjet technology and use a number of advanced HP proprietary technologies to achieve incredible accuracy, sharpness and superior colour fidelity, water-resistant prints that resist fading for more than 200 years on a range of HP media (interior display, away from direct sunlight). The HP DesignJet Z6 & Z9+ PostScript Printers feature HP Pixel Control, High Definition Nozzle Architecture (HDNA), HP Scalable Printing (SPT) and HP Vivid Photo Inks.

HP Pixel Control reinvented how colour is defined. Originally, images were separated and processed in ink layers, a process in place for over 125 years. Inherent in the layering, is a lack of control over ink combinations, resulting in unreliable image quality with duller colours, less detail, less contrast and sometimes artefacts and contours. HP Pixel Control is truly a digital colour pipeline, which means colour is defined and composed at the pixel level. Every pixel is controlled, creating superior image quality with more detail, more contrast, deeper colours and smoother transitions. HP Pixel Control, in combination with the HP Vivid Photo Inks, delivers higher quality images with few inks, so original 12-colour printer quality can now be achieved and exceeded with the 9-colour HP DesignJet Z9+ PostScript Printer Series, and 8-colour printer quality can now be achieved and exceeded with 6-colour HP DesignJet Z6 PostScript Printer Series.

HDNA, High Definition Nozzle Architecture, found on the HP DesignJet 746 Printhead features true 2400 nozzles per inch with dual drop weight. The larger drop size is for productivity and the smaller drop size reduces grain visibility. Magenta, Cyan, and Photo Black have a dual-drop weight of 7 or 3 picoliters. Yellow, Chromatic Red, and Matte Black have a single drop weight of 6 picoliters. The result is more quality with fewer inks.

HP Scalable Printing Technology (SPT) allows HP DesignJet Z Series and T Series printers to deliver higher quality at higher speeds with more ink colours. HP SPT is the result of HP’s investment of $1.4B and four years of research and development. SPT printheads were first introduced in 2005, and incorporate fluidic design and electronic control features required to meet the demands of commercial and industrial inkjet printing. HP thermal inkjet printheads are produced on a silicon wafer using SPT integrated circuit manufacturing processes customized for HP inkjet applications. SPT offers higher density circuitry that can place more electronic functionality on the printhead than was possible in previous generations of HP Thermal Inkjet printheads. Each SPT-based printhead incorporates electronic circuits that process input and output signals, manage power, control the drop generators and measure the printhead temperature. Ink channels, drop generator chambers and nozzles for the printheads are built tighter across the surface of the silicon wafer and the manufacturing techniques for SPT produce complete, integrated printhead structures with features that are defined and aligned together with sub-micron precision. HP thermal inkjet printheads feature a modular snap-out/snap-in design for simple and quick user replacement. HP Z Series Printers print a test plot whenever a printhead is replaced, and the plot is automatically scanned by an optical sensor on the print carriage to perform an automatic colour-to-colour alignment without requiring manual mechanical adjustments.

HP DesignJet Z6 & Z9+ PostScript Printer Series use long-lasting HP 746 printheads which feature automatic self-maintenance and nozzle substitution routines to provide flawless image quality, lower running costs and more efficient ink usage during installation and cleaning routines. The five user-replaceable printheads contain two colours per printhead with 2112 nozzles each, or 1056 nozzles per colour. The ink drop size ranges from 4 picoliter (light cyan, light magenta, light grey, grey, photo black and gloss enhancer) to 6 picoliter (magenta, yellow, matte black, red, green, and blue). To ensure dependable and consistent image quality every time, the drop-ejection performance of every nozzle is periodically and automatically tested with an Optical Drop Detector.

HP DesignJet Z6 & Z9 PostScript Printer Series feature HP Vivid Photo Inks with the HP 6-ink and HP 9-ink writing system, designed and engineered together to provide optimised efficiency, increased colour gamut, improved colour accuracy and colour consistency . Chromatic Red, Blue and Green inks have been added, along with Photo Black, Matte Black, and grey, Additionally, HP Gloss Enhancer is also featured with the both the 6-ink and 9-ink writing systems, and is an optional accessory for the 24 inch version. HP Gloss Enhancer is for glossy and semi-gloss photo media and virtually eliminates bronzing and provides uniform gloss across the full range of print densities and colours, from highlights to shadows. HP Vivid Photo Inks produce water- and fade- resistant prints that resist fading for more than 200 years on a range of HP media (interior display away from direct sunlight).

HP DesignJet printers are designed for recyclability. HP Planet Partners programme is for recycling your HP DesignJet ink cartridges. All HP print cartridges returned go through a multiphase recycling process where they are reduced to raw materials. These materials can then be used to make new metal and plastic parts and products. No HP print cartridges returned and recycled through HP Planet Partners are sent to landfill. Most HP DesignJet printheads can also be returned through the HP Planet Partners programme.
